About the Position

The Ophthalmic/Optometric Assistant provides technical and office support to the optometric practice by performing duties such as assisting with patient exams, reviewing inventory, and ordering merchandise, data entry, and, and monitoring provider schedules.

Float position provides coverage for multiple clinics based on business and patient volume.  Travel between clinics may be required in the course of the assigned shift.

Essential Functions 

  • Assist with eyewear process- frame selection and fitting, lens selection with appropriate measurements.
  • Verify prescription glasses and notify patients when eyewear is ready for pick up.
  • Enter eyeglass and contact lens orders in EHR.
  • Dispense, adjust, and repair eyewear per department protocol and document information in EHR.
  • Provide Contact Lens Education Classes (Insertion & Removal).
  • Review eyewear/ contact lens invoices and patient payment records for accuracy and forward them to the Vision Care Practice Manager.
  • Assist in triage of urgent care patients with assistance from Vision Care Practice Manager as needed.
  • Monitor the Vision EHR desktop – responding to and/or forwarding flags/documents in a timely manner.
  • Assist in Clinical care of patients with providers as permitted with licensure and training:
    • Assess visual acuity, extraocular muscle function, confrontational visual fields, color vision and stereopsis.
    • Administration of cycloplegic agents, and measurement of intraocular pressure.
    • Assess finger-stick blood sugar in diabetic patients as ordered by provider
    • Perform Visual field / OCT testing as ordered by provider
  • Maintain exam rooms as needed by provider. Keep rooms adequately stocked with supplies and cleaned daily.
  • Order supplies from appropriate vendors as needed—obtain pre-approval as needed.
  • Provide assistance with cross coverage for fellow Vision care staff at all Vision locations. 
  • Receive training on Ryan White CPCDMS system.
  • Maintain communication with Vision Care Practice Manager—update on issues/questions/ suggestions for improvement.
  • Attend and participate in Vision Team Meetings and other necessary meetings as assigned. Support cross coverage for fellow Vision care staff at all Vision locations, as needed. 
  • Participate in the Performance Improvement Program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Training Requirements 

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Must maintain BLS/CPR

Work Experience Requirements 

  • At least 2 years of experience in a vision setting, preferred 
  • Ophthalmic Certification preferred.
  • Spanish/English bilingual, preferred
